Algebra Exam Questions

How to solve algebra word questions?
I’m trying to solve a problem to take an exam in my class, but I don’t know how to solve it. The problem is this:
“Sally can paint a house in 4 hours, and John can paint the same house in 6 hours. How long will it take for both of them to paint the house together?”
I know for a fact that the answer is 2 hours and 24 minutes, but I don’t know how to get the answer. Help will be appreciated, asap.
You have to think “upside down”. Sally can paint 1/4 house/hr. John can paint 1/6 house/hr.
Together they can paint 1/4 +1/6 house/hr
1/4+1/6=3/12+2/12=5/12 house/hr. To paint 1 house takes 12/5 hrs=2.4 hrs=2 hrs 24 min.
