How to do algebra factoring problems on a graphing calculator?

I have a TI-83 Plus
10 points first to answer correctly

You can not factor on that calculator.

However, you can factor by hand, and then by defining a variable, type in your original equation and your factored equation and see if they equal the same.

i.e. your equation is x^2 – 1. I factor this by hand to (x – 1)(x + 1). Now on my calculator, I define “x” as 2 (to define a variable, type in the number, press the “STO>” button, then type in the letter, then press enter). Here is the key sequence:

[2] [STO>] [ALPHA] [X] [ENTER]

Now you can type the equation exactly as you see it in your calculator.

Type in x^2 – 1. You will get 3.

Now type in (x – 1)(x + 1). You also get 3. Therefore, you factored correctly.
