Algebra Problems For 8th Graders
Exponents!! Please Help!?
Im in 8th grade, and im having trouble with my math homework. This whole lesson is on exponents. Im taking Algebra 1 Honors as an 8th grader, which is pretty advanced. Now these exponents arent easy 6th grade exponents. A sample question would be something like:
7x^-1y^3 (3xy^2)^-1
x^2y^-2 X xy
(underlines dont work, and “^” means to the poower of, couldnt find anyway else to write exponents. the problems are divided by the numbers underneath them.. like
(7x^-1y^3) divided by (x^2y^-2)
if that makes sense?)
Im not looking for an answer so please dont post saying im trying to cheat. I have asked questions but my teacher never answers them and tells us to read over our notes. Please just an explanation to how to do this problem would be greatly appreciated!
the big x (X) means “multipled by” it wont come out looking right
7x^-1y^3 (3xy^2)^-1
x^2y^-2 X xy
First, you plug in the -1 exponent to (3xy^2)
You need to multiply it with the exponents with in the parenthesis. 3x would be 3x^1, if you were wondering.
^1 times ^-1 = ^1
^2 times ^-1 = ^-2
Should end up with something like this:
7x^-1y^3 (3x^-1y^-2)
x^2y^-2 X xy
Second, you need to multiply 7x^-1y^3 with 3x^-1y^-2
Remember to add the exponents when you multiply.
7 times 3 = 21
x^-1 times x^-1 = x^-2
y^3 times y^-2 = y^1 = y
It should look like this:
21x^-2y
x^2y^-2 X xy
Next, multiply x^2y^-2 with xy. Even though x and y don’t show any exponents, they still have them. The exponent for them is 1.
x^2 times x^1 = x^3
y^-2 times y^1 = y^-1
It should look like this so far:
21x^-2y
x^3y^-1
Were nearly done, you need to make your exponents positive. You can do that by bringing 21x^-2 to the bottom part of the problem and bringing y^-1 to the top part of the problem.
It should look like this:
y X y
21x^2 X x^3
Then, multiply it. Remember that y has an exponent of 1.
y times y = y^2
21x^2 times x^3 = 21x^5
You should have this answer:
y^2
21x^5
or at least, that’s what I got. I hope I explained it good enough.
