Please help me answer these 2 problems
Five years ago, Gemma was twice as old as Tony is now. In seven years, Gemma will be five times as old as Tony is now. What are Gemma’s and Tony’s current ages? Gemma’s ago? Tony’s age?
Opening night of the latest summer blockbuster sold out the local theater’s 550 seats. If the regular ticket prive is $7 and the senior ticket price is $5, how many regular tickets and how many senior tickets were sold if the total amount collected was $3,480? Regular tickets? Senior tickets?
G = Gemma’s current age
T = Tony’s current age
G – 5 = 2T (Gemma’s age minus five is twice Tony’s age)
G + 7 = 5T (Gemma’s age plus 7 is five times Tony’s age)
Solve the first equation for G, to get G = 2T + 5. Plus this into the second equation to get (2T + 5) + 7 = 5T. Solve for T. Once you have T, plug this back into the equation G = 2T + 5 to find G.
The second one is solved in a similar way once you set up the equations.
R = # of regular tickets
S = # of senior tickets
R + S = 550. (R regular tickets plus S senior tickets gives 550 total tickets)
7R + 5S = 3480 ($7 for each regular ticket plus $5 for each senior ticket gives a total of $3480).
For this one, solve for either R or S in the first equation, then plug that value into the second equation.
