1) You are buying flowers to hand out at a school dance. Roses cast $30 Dollars for a dozen but cost more if bought individually. With the money you have, you can buy 7 dozen and 4 single roses, or 64 single roses. How much is one rose? How much money do you have?
2) The populations of two towns are changing at a steady rate. One town has a population of 25,500. It’s population is increasing by 2000 people each year. The other town has a population of 47,900. It’s population is decreasing by 800 people each year. If the rates of each town remains the same, in how many years will the population be the same?
let x = price per single rose:
30 * price of dozen = 7 dozen roses price
4x = price of 4 single roses
64x = price of 64 single roses….
since you can by 7 dz + 4 OR 64 single roses, set them = to each other:
30*7 + 4x = 64x
210 + 4x = 64x
210 + 4x + -4x = 64x + -4x
210 = 60x
210/60 = 60x/60
3.5 = x
$3.50 each for a single rose
64 * 3.5 = $224.00 = how much money you have:
CHECK:
7*30 + 4*3.5 = 224?
210 + 14 = 224 YES you are correct.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
town one = 25,500; increase 2000 people/year = 25500 + 2000y
town two = 47,900; decrease 800 people/year = 47900 – 800y = 47900 + -800y
how long until populations are =? Set the equations =
25500 + 2000y = 47900 + -800y
–>move -800y by adding 800y to both sides; move 25500 by adding -25500 to both sides; combine like terms
2000y + 800y + 25500 + -25500 = 47900 + -800y + 800y + -25500
2000y + 800y = 47900 + -25500
2800y = 22400
–>divide both sides by 2800 to find y:
2800y/2800 = 22400/2800
y = 8
the populations will be the same in 8 years.
