Sample Algebra Problems With Answers
Algebra question need help?
My problem is:
determine the coordinates for the x intercept. This is calculated by substituting 0 for y in the equation y = mx +b and then solving for x.
This means that the answer is going to be (#,0) since it is the x intercept. My bad math teacher made a sheet with sample points and shows how to do the problems. The way the example shows it is this:
y = mx + b
0 = 1(x) + 1
-1_______-1
-1 = x
————————
Now my situation….
0 = -3/4 (x) + 13/4
-13/4_________-13/4
-13/4 = x
——————–
what I dont understand is what happens to the 3/4? and how come the x isnt equal (since it needs to be graphed)?

Your teacher’s example and your example are not the same. The example has a slope of one which makes operations easier. Your problem is a little different.
0= -3/4x + 13/4
First subtract 13/4 from both sides.
0-13/4 = -3/4x +13/4 – 13/4
so we now have
-13/4 = -3/4 x
Now we have to divide by -3/4. (Or with fractions we can also see it as flipping and multiplying) So multiply both sides by -4/3.
(-4/3)(-13/4) = x
Simplify. Our 4′s cancel. The neg cancel and we are left with 13/3 = x.
Keep in mind our m is slope (the coefficient in front of the x). And we also have a y-intercept of (0,13/4). From this you should be able to graph it.
